SULAIMANI — Students from the University of Charmo blocked the Kirkuk-Sulaimani road on Monday (January 20) to protest the lack of services and proper accommodations at a dormitory that houses female students in Shorsh sub-district.

“There are more than 250 students in the dormitory and the first stage students do not have any accommodation. Each of the rooms contains eight people,” one protester told NRT Digital Media.

The students also said that they were forced to do their homework outside their rooms due to lack of accommodation and, as a result, they often became sick and needed medical attention.

Charmo students staged a similar protest on January 15 and had threatened to escalate the protests if their demands were ignored.

The lack of proper accommodation at university dormitories is a rising problem in the Kurdistan Region.

Last year, students at the University of Sulaimani closed down the campus for a week over the dilapidated condition of the dorms.
