215 refugees drowned in 2019: IFIR

SULAIMANI — The International Federation of Iraqi Refugees (IFIR) said on Saturday (January 19) that 215 migrants drowned in 2019 in the waters between Turkey and Greece trying to enter Europe.

According to IFIR, another twenty migrants died inside Turkey and an estimated 60,000 were rescued from the Aegean Sea. 454,662 were arrested in Turkey.

“12,418 of the refugees were from Iraq. The number one country for refugee numbers was Afghanistan with 201,437,” IFIR said.

“In 2019 8,996 smugglers were arrested and, in 2020, 130 Iraqi refugees and 156 smugglers have been arrested so far,” IFIR added.
