SULAIMANI — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani expressed his condolences to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on the death of top Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani.

The United States killed Soleimani and Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in an airstrike near Baghdad International Airport on Friday.

The Kurdistan Region’s Presidency said on Monday (January 6) that President Barzani had sent a letter to Khamenei extending his condolence to the Iranian supreme leader and Soleimani’s family.

“The incident of the loss of Haj Qassem Soleimani is a matter of regret for the people of the Kurdistan Region. He was our friend,” Barzani said in the letter to Khamenei.

“Qassem Soleimani was our companion in the battle against dictatorship, a supporter of us, and a partner with us against the terrorist group of Daesh,” Barzani added, using an Arabic acronym for Islamic State (ISIS).

The Kurdish politicians and government officials including Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani participated in mourning ceremonies for Soleimani in the Kurdistan Region on Sunday.

The killing of Soleimani, the architect of Iran’s drive to extend its influence across the Middle East, on the orders of US President Donald Trump, has stoked concern across the globe that a broader regional conflict could erupt.
