SULAIMANI — Iraqi caretaker Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi said on Monday (December 30) that the US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper had informed his office in advance of the strike on Kataib Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed paramilitary that is part of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).

“US Secretary of Defense informed me of the strike beforehand. I tried to warn the PMF about the strike,” Abdul Mahdi said.

“We shall not be a part of any faction against others or our neighboring countries,” he added.

Iraqi security and militia sources said at least 25 militia fighters were killed and at least 55 wounded following in three US air strikes in Iraq. There were two other strikes on targets in Syria.

At least four local commanders were among the dead, the sources said, adding that one of the strikes had targeted the militia group’s headquarters near the western Qaim district on the border with Syria.
