SULAIMANI — Following a deadly attack on an Asayish unit in the disputed areas, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani warned on Saturday (November 30) about the persistence of Islamic State (ISIS).

“We have always issued many warnings about its continuing danger. The international community should continue to help the Kurdistan Region and Iraq deter the threat posed by ISIS terrorists and to remove the factors that have led to the emergence and growing threat of terrorism,” Barzani said in a statement.

Three Asayish, including a commander, were killed on Friday night in an ambush by ISIS militants near the town of Kolajo, which is in Koks sub-district.

“This attack by ISIS terrorists shows that this terrorist movement has not yet been completely eradicated,” Barzani added.

Taking advantage of the security vacuum between federal and KRG forces, ISIS continues to operate in the disputed areas, particularly in Diyala and Kirkuk governorates.

On Saturday, at least sixteen people were wounded when three bombs exploded in Kirkuk, which the security commander blamed on ISIS.
