SULAIMANI — The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) called on the United States and Russia to hold Turkey accountable for “crimes” it had carried out during its offensive into northeastern Syria.

SDF Commander Mazloum Abdi said in a tweet that the US and Russia “are responsible” for protecting Kurdish children from Turkish attacks.

Turkish warplanes targeted a vehicle carrying seven members of a family in the village of Qaranful, west of Tell Abiad (Gre Spi), on Wednesday night. The attack killed two civilians and wounded three others, including a child.

“Turkey massacred a Kurdish family in a drone strike near Kobani claiming 7 'terrorists' were killed,” Abdi said on Thursday night.

“Ceasefire guarantors US & Russia are responsible to protect our children from being massacred by Turkey & we call on them to investigate & hold Turkey accountable for its crimes.”

Turkey began a cross-border offensive against the Kurds in Syria last month after Trump announced the withdrawal of US troops from the area. At one point around 300,000 people fled their homes and 100,000 remain displaced, according to the UN.

Turkey’s military conducted two other operations in northern Syria over the last three years. Shortly after each, Turks were sent to the polls for a referendum in 2017 and for nationwide elections in 2018.
