SULAIMANI — Angry at delayed salary payments, municipal workers in Chwarqurna went on strike on Wednesday (September 4).

The Raparin administration employs nearly 700 workers to clean roads and streets, but they have now walked off the job in protest.

“Even though our wages are really low, it has been two months since we have been paid and we are in a really bad financial state,” one worker who gave his name as Sarhad Muhammad told NRT Digital Media.

“Due to the delay and the low wages, we were forced to sell our furniture and household goods,” he added.

According to the workers,  payment of their salaries are often delayed. Moreover, since the beginning of this year, their paychecks have been cut by 25 percent.
