SULAIMANI — The Asayish (security) arrested a cameraman on Tuesday (July 9) for taking pictures during the funeral of a Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader who was killed in Turkish strikes last week.

Cameraman Zimnako Ismael told NRT Digital Media that he had been present during the funeral of PKK leader Diyar Gharib and that he had had documented the event as a journalist over a period of two days.

Ismael said a group of people wearing civilian clothes told him that he was not allowed to take pictures at the funeral.

“They later kidnapped me without a court order for my arrest,” he continued.

He added that he was taken to the prison of the Asayish general directorate in Sulaimani and detained for several hours. He noted his camera and other equipment have not been returned to him yet.

On Sunday, the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) confirmed that Gharib had been killed in Turkish strikes in the Qandil Mountains on July 5.
