SULAIMANI — Flooding collapsed part of a bridge on the main road between Sulaimani and Kalar on Monday (March 25).

Beginning on Sunday night, a wave of heavy rain hit parts of the Kurdistan Region. The forecast calls for continued showers over the next several days.

NRT Digital Media reporter Garmyan Hamapour said that part of the Daradoyn bridge linking Sulaimani to Kalar had collapsed because of local flooding.

Spokesperson for the Garmyan Traffic Police Karzan Majid said that the road had been closed, adding that  civilians could detour around the affected area using the road in the foothills of Sartaki Bamo.

The bridge had suffered damage previously and the local authorities had installed temporary supports in an effort to stabilize it.

The General-Directorate of Meteorology and Seismology has warned that flooding could hit several areas in the Kurdistan Region due to the wave of heavy rain currently affecting the Region.

Floods have hit Sulaimani and Erbil provinces and caused damage in several areas.
