the Kurdistan Region commemorates the Anfal campaign in Badinan, launched by the former regime 37 years ago after the end of the Iraq-Iran war. The last phase of Anfal began on August 8, 1988, targeting the districts of Zakho, Amedi, Sheikhan, and Akre.
As in previous campaigns, the regime first bombed strategic areas with cluster munitions and chemical weapons. The most devastating assault occurred on August 24 in the village of Spidari, near Mount Gara, followed by heavy chemical attacks against villages on Mount Garash and surrounding areas.
On August 25, 1988, warplanes bombed villages including Burjini in Zawita, Hesi, Kharabiya, and Yakmalai in Barwari Zheri, leaving behind destruction and mass civilian casualties.
