New Generation Movement Shaswar Abdulwahid, leader of Iraq’s New Generation Movement (NGM), is reportedly experiencing serious health problems in prison. At the same time, his family and NGM Members of Parliament have been denied access, raising urgent questions about transparency, accountability, and the fairness of his detention. The case is being managed not by neutral authorities, but by the ruling parties in the Kurdistan Region the PUK and KDP. As the largest opposition party without military or paramilitary wings, NGM is facing targeted pressure through courts and security forces controlled by these parties. Preventing family and parliamentary visits highlights the use of state institutions for political intimidation rather than legitimate judicial procedure. Abdulwahid’s trial has been marred by manipulated evidence, distorted witness testimonies, and limited courtroom access. These irregularities make clear that the prosecution is politically motivated and intended to silence opposition voices. The PUK and KDP are directly responsible for blocking access and creating ongoing risks to Abdulwahid’s health, underscoring the politicization of justice and security in the region. This situation requires urgent international attention to protect Abdulwahid’s well-being and uphold basic human rights.
