Graduates of Garmian universities have been protesting for five days in Garmian province against the Kurdistan Regional Government’s refusal to recognize their academic qualifications. On August 22, 2025, they escalated their protest by starting a hunger strike.
The graduates, including those from Khanaqin, say they have become victims of political conflicts between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad. They hold the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research responsible for recognizing the universities and colleges of Khanaqin.
After repeated appeals went unheeded, the graduates resorted to a hunger strike, urging the Kurdistan Regional Government to intervene and acknowledge their certificates. They warned that the situation could worsen if their demands remain unmet.
