Iraqi parliament member Mohammed Ismail said Saturday that the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) believe that by arresting Shaswar Abdulwahid, leader of the largest opposition force in the Kurdistan Region, they can intimidate the people and prolong their rule.
Ismail noted that the events surrounding Abdulwahid’s arrest, as well as the treatment of the opposition, prove that the ruling parties fear losing their grip on power.
"What should be feared is not the people, but those who are currently in full control, because the same practices they are using today may eventually be used against them,” he said.
He stressed that the best path forward for the ruling parties is to respect the will of the people and the role of institutions.
