Iraq and Britain have signed a new agreement to facilitate the return of Iraqi migrants who entered the United Kingdom illegally and were denied residence permits, the British news agency reported on Wednesday.
The deal, signed by the UK Home Secretary, will allow for the repatriation of Iraqis who have no legal right to remain in the country. Officials say the agreement is aimed at strengthening cooperation on immigration management and addressing the challenges of illegal migration.
According to the UK Home Office, the number of Iraqi migrants arriving illegally has already decreased. This year, 1,900 Iraqis were recorded crossing into the UK without authorization, compared to 2,600 the previous year.
The new accord follows an earlier agreement between Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to expand coordination on immigration and border control. Both governments emphasized that the latest step reflects their shared commitment to tackling illegal migration and improving bilateral relations.
