Journalist Sherwan Sherwani has been sentenced to an additional four years and six months in prison, extending his incarceration on the very day he was scheduled to be released.
Sulaiman Musa, the leader of the New Generation Movement list in Duhok, said the new sentence was issued in advance to prevent Sherwani’s release, calling the ruling unjust.
Sherwani was originally sentenced on July 20, 2023, to four years in prison. After appealing, his sentence was reduced to two years. However, today’s decision has prolonged his imprisonment by another four and a half years.
The case has drawn widespread criticism from civil society and rights groups, who view the extension as politically motivated.
