SULAIMANI — Eight people died and four members of civil defense forces were injured due to floods that broke out in six neighborhoods in the city of Erbil early on Friday (December 17) morning, an NRT reporter in the city said.

Dozens of cars and trucks were swept away in the floods, including a vehicle from civil defense forces, and a number of people were left without a place to live when their homes were flooded.

The NRT journalist said the risk has fallen but the floods still continue, while civil defense teams work to rescue residents in the affected areas.

Erbil Governor Omid Khoshnaw said the flooding began at about 4am this morning in parts of the province and that teams were occupied and need the cooperation of the public.

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Friday extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the floods and said immediate action would be taken to provide for the needs of those affected.
