— Eight people died and four members of civil defense forces were injured due
to floods that broke out in six neighborhoods in the city of Erbil early on Friday
(December 17) morning, an NRT reporter in the city said.
Dozens
of cars and trucks were swept away in the floods, including a vehicle from
civil defense forces, and a number of people were left without a place to live when
their homes were flooded.
The
NRT journalist said the risk has fallen but the floods still continue, while
civil defense teams work to rescue residents in the affected areas.
Erbil
Governor Omid Khoshnaw said the flooding began at about 4am this morning in
parts of the province and that teams were occupied and need the cooperation of
the public.
Kurdistan
Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Friday extended his
condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the floods and
said immediate action would be taken to provide for the needs of those
affected.
