SULAIMANI — Head of Sulaimani Tourism Directorate Ali Rauf said on Saturday (May 15) that approximately 70,000 tourists visited Sulaimani governorate during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, with 90 percent of that total coming from Iraqi governorates outside of the Kurdistan Region.

Rauf said that around 50,000 of them arrived in the two days before Eid begin on Thursday and that there had been coronavirus mitigation measures implemented at the checkpoints entering the governorate.

He added that hotels and motels were largely at capacity as a result.

Holiday tourism is a major source of income for the Kurdistan Region, but the industry has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.
