SULAIMANI — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said on Thursday (April 23) that young people in Iraq no longer accept empty slogans from the country’s politicians.

During an interview with Iraqi television channel al-Sharqiya, Barzani said that those born after 2003 in particular are now ready for change.

Saying that Iraqis “want life,” he added that resolving outstanding issues between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad is integral to the political stability that Iraq must form for itself.

Barzani argued that all political parties and components should search for a common understanding and vision for the future of Iraq and learn from past mistakes.

Last month, the Council of Representatives passed the 2021 Federal Budget Law, which included a financial deal between Baghdad and Erbil that has raised hopes that the two sides will be able to make progress in resolving other disagreement as well, including about the disputed areas.

Observers, however, are waiting to see whether either side will implement the budget deal.
