SULAIMANI — Head of Sulaimani Food Directorate Shawkat Muhammed said on Saturday (April 17) that residents in the Kurdistan Region will receive cooking oil and sugar during the holy month of Ramadan as part of their food ration from Iraq’s federal government.

Muhammed told NRT that two months’ worth of rations is expected to be distributed during Ramadan but only one has been transferred by Baghdad so far. It has been given to the food brokers to distribute directly to residents.

On March 22, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi ordered the federal Ministry of Commerce to increase the amount of food provided under the monthly ration scheme to combat price gouging and unscrupulous manipulation of the market.
