SULAIMANI — Food safety officials said on Friday (April 16) that they had seized 600 kilograms (1,323 pounds) of expired dates in Bazian sub-district.

The seller had attempted to fraudulently change the original expiration date, which is illegal under Iraqi law. Officials said that they would take him to court.

Dates are closely associated with Ramadan, with people often consuming them during Iftar after breaking their fasts.

Officials in the Kurdistan Region have said that they will be vigilant and crack down hard on any merchants selling expired goods or raising their prices during the Islamic holy month.
