SULAIMANI — Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) lawmaker Abubakir Haladani said during a parliamentary debate on Wednesday (April 14) that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) denied a request by Jalamord village in Chamchamal district, where nearly 400 people were killed during the genocidal Anfal campaign, for 4 million Iraqi dinars ($2,742) to spend on local infrastructure improvements.

Local officials affected by the Anfal often argue that an important way that the government can honor the victims is by rebuilding and improving the areas that were targeted by the Ba’athist regime. The campaign killed at least 100,000 Kurdish civilians and destroyed approximately 4,000 villages

Wednesday’s parliamentary session took place on Anfal Memorial Day, which is celebrated annually on April 14.

Haladani added that KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani should have been present during the session so they could hear lawmakers relate messages from survivors and families of the victims.
