176 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in Kurdistan Region: ministry

SULAIMANI — The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday (February 24) it had officially recorded 176 new cases of coronavirus over the past 24 hours.

There were 77 new cases in Erbil governorate, 71 in Duhok, twenty-three in Sulaimani, and five in the Garmian administration.

On October 27, the Region recorded its highest single-day total with 1,597 infections.

The ministry also said three patients had died from the disease, while 77 others recovered.

On Tuesday night, KRG Minister of Health Saman Barzinji said in a statement that most of the new cases are the from the UK coronavirus variant.

According to the health ministry, there have been 108,238 officially-recorded cases of coronavirus infection in the Kurdistan Region. An official tally of 103,155 patients have recovered from COVID-19 and 3,513 have died from it.

The numbers are almost certainly an undercount.
