SULAIMANI — New Generation Movement President Shaswar Abdulwahid said on Monday (January 25) that the current round of budget negotiations represents the last chance for the Kurdistan Region to reach an agreement with the federal government.

“The people [of the Kurdistan Region] will not be silent forever, nor will we,” Abdulwahid said of the Movement in a post on Facebook.

“The living conditions of the people are deteriorating. We do not have a government or institutions,” he continued.

Abdulwahid argued that there is no path left for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) except for them to reach agreement with Baghdad, make the oil industry transparent, end companies’ partisan affiliations and make them pay taxes, achieve fair elections, and establish proper oversight institutions for government.

He predicted that if the ruling parties failed to do so that there will eventually be a mass uprising, international pressure to improve governance in the Region, or an intervention by foreign or Iraqi troops.
