SULAIMANI — Soran Traffic Directorate said on Thursday (August 6) that drivers and passengers must wear protective face masks, adding that it would fine any driver 50,000 Iraqi dinars ($42.06) if they fail to do so.

The traffic directorate said that the decision was issued as a measure to curb the spread of coronavirus infections and was legally based on the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Interior statement number 46, clause 11.

The measure applies to private, commercial, taxi, and bus drivers.

“Necessary measures have been taken due to the proliferation of coronavirus in the Region. People should adhere to the instructions,” the statement added.

According to the health ministry, there have been 15,577 cases of coronavirus in the Kurdistan Region. An official tally of 9,711 patients has recovered from COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus infection, and 597 have died from it as of Wednesday.
