SULAIMANI — Speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament Rewaz Fayaq said on Tuesday (July 7) that preserving and rejuvenating local agriculture cannot be accomplished by a single ministry or minister, but instead requires unity within the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

“The borders need to be closed to all products with which local produce cannot compete,” Fayaq said emphasizing that there are powerful interests that would oppose such a plan.

The speaker added that the KRG should take responsibility for the situation and give some sort of certainty or guarantee to farmers to lift them out of a situation that many find hopeless.

On Monday, farmers protested in Erbil by dumping their produce onto a major roadway, saying that they cannot sell their fruit and vegetables at local markets because of the presence of cheap imports.
