SULAIMANI — Sulaimani Governor Haval Abubakr said late on Sunday (July 5) that problems caused by a watermain break in the city will be solved on Monday.

On Sunday, a section of pipe ruptured in the Sarchinar neighborhood, sending a gusher of water soaring into the sky. Sulaimani Water Director Sarbast Osman blamed the break on ageing infrastructure and initially predicted that repairs may take a week to complete.

Governor Abubbakr, however, offered a much faster timeline, saying that any disruptions would be solved in short order.

“After the Kurdistan Regional Government [KRG] and the KRG Ministry of Finance and Economy allocated an emergency budget, we are trying to fix all the broken parts and to put the [nearby water] station back on track,” Abubakr said.

Water Director Osman told NRT’s Panorama program on Sunday night that workers had already fixed more than 80 percent of the damage and that the remaining work would be completed within two days.
