SULAIMANI — The Government of Iraq has said that Tuesday will be a public holiday to mark the second anniversary of the country’s declaration of victory over Islamic State (ISIS).

In 2017, the government designated December 10 as a day of victory over ISIS militants and a holiday recognized in all the governorates outside of the Kurdistan Region.

Spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Jutiar Adil told NRT that Tuesday would not be a holiday in the Region.

Baghdad declared military victory over ISIS in December 2017 after expelling the militants from all urban centers that the militant group had previously controlled in northern and western Iraq.

Nevertheless, ISIS has not completely disappeared and sleeper cells continue to fight a guerrilla war against government forces and attack civilians.
