SULAIMANI — Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) commander Mazloum Abdi has praised US President Donald Trump for his efforts to protect northeastern Syria from ethnic cleansing.

The commander, known as Mazloum Kobane, said in a tweet on Friday night (November 15) that Trump’s efforts had a positive impact on the the fight against Islamic State and also praised the efforts of the international coalition.

Trump’s “efforts … protect the region from ethnic cleansing,” he added, despite fears from Syrian Kurdish officials that the Turkish incursion into Syria could lead to ethnic cleansing of local Kurds.

Turkey began a cross-border offensive against the Kurds in Syria last month after Trump announced the withdrawal of US troops from the area. At one point around 300,000 people fled their homes and 100,000 remain displaced, according to the UN.

Turkey’s military conducted two other operations in northern Syria over the last three years. Shortly after each, Turks were sent to the polls for a referendum in 2017 and for nationwide elections in 2018.
