Journalists Amanj Babani and Lana Muhammad, their son die in tragic circumstances in Sulaimani

SULAIMANI — Kurdish journalists Amanj Babani and Lana Muhammad died in tragic circumstances along with their three-year old son in Sulaimani on Wednesday evening (October 16).

In the early hours of Thursday morning, the Sulaimani Police Directorate’s Communication and Relations Department released a brief statement announcing the initial findings of their investigation.

“Unfortunately, tonight a heartbreaking incident occurred at Sharazur Terminal in Sulaimani city, which caused the deaths of three people: Amanj Muhammad Nuri born in 1979, Lana Muhammad Salih born in 1990, and Hano Amanj Muhammad aged 3-years-old,” the statement read.

“We are declaring to the public opinion that the incident was a suicide according to the police investigation,” it added.

“We will publish details of the incident tomorrow,” it concluded

Popularly known as Amanj Babani, Muhammad Nuri was the anchor of NRT's program Be Snur. Muhammad Salih worked for Kurdsat. They were married several years ago.

Their deaths prompted an outpouring of grief from the journalist community and a wave of condolences from the Kurdistan Region’s political and cultural leaders.
