SULAIMANI — A lecturer at Sulaimani University told NRT a professor who padlocked the gates at the college’s old campus on Saturday (May 14) in protest over the staff’s overdue wages has been arrested.

Ahmad Mohammed said his colleague, Zangin Abubakr, was detained by security forces at about 3pm on Saturday.

An NRT reporter said teachers and other staff at the university gathered in front of the college in protest against the arrest of Zangin.

University professors and employees from Sulaimani, Raparin and Halabja have been protesting for a week over the non-payment of their salaries and the suspension of promotions.

Zangin and other employees locked the gates earlier on Saturday at the old campus, announcing the gate would remain locked and they would continue their strike until their demands are met.

Lecturers have yet to receive their wages for the month of March as the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) said on May 8 the public sector salary distribution would begin on May 9.

Employees have also criticized the difference between Sulaimani province with Erbil and Duhok, where March salaries have already been issued.
