SULAIMANI — A source from Saadia sub-district police informed NRT a member of federal counter-terrorism forces died and five others were injured while on duty due to a blast from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Diyala governorate on Saturday (May 14).

Police said three of the five wounded officers sustained severe wounds and were transferred to a hospital in Sharaban (Miqdadiya) district.

The police source also revealed counter-terror forces had been conducting a search in the area for hideouts used by Islamic State (ISIS) members.

The incident occurred in the area of Imam Waisi, located between Khanaqin and Saadia sub-district.

Federal police and counter-terror forces have been deployed to the area since Peshmerga forces withdrew following October 16, 2018 when Iraqi forces took control of Kirkuk and other disputed areas.
