SULAIMANI — Head of New Generation caucus in the Kurdistan Parliament Kazim Faruq argued on Wednesday (July 28) that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is only taking up discussions of winter fuel supplies as a populist display ahead of the election.

Many communities in the Kurdistan Region, particularly those in the remote mountains, rely on subsidized fuel to run heaters during the winter. The government has come under increasing criticism for its failure to distribute sufficient or timely supplies over the past several years.

"As much as they talk about their power and weapons, they are afraid of the people and the voice of the people and the elections,” he said.

"People should know the value of their votes and it is influence because it turns out that the only thing the authorities fear is the voice of people and elections,” he added.

"That is why two months before the election, they will be doing projects and serving the people.”

The issue of winter fuel distribution was discussed at the KRG Council of Ministers’ weekly meeting on Wednesday.
