SULAIMANI — Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said at least 175 Islamic State (ISIS) militants have been killed in ongoing clashes between Kurdish forces and members of the militant group in the vicinity of al-Sinaa prison in the northeastern city of Hasaka, Rojava Information Center (RIC) reported.

The SDF told RIC 17 of their forces have been killed battling ISIS militants after sleeper cells staged a break-out attempt from the prison, which houses thousands of Islamic State members in a converted school in the Ghweiran neighborhood of Hasaka.

Twenty-three SDF members have been injured in the clashes, according to RIC, which also stated 110 ISIS members have been captured.

The SDF Coordination and Military Ops Center said on Saturday their forces seized a vehicle with weapons, ammunition and explosive belts.

Internal Security Forces (ISF) were sending messages via loudspeakers to militants who had barricaded themselves in buildings, telling them to surrender, Hawar News Agency said. The SDF-linked news agency said clashes were ongoing since Saturday night in the southern area of Hasaka

The head of the SDF media center, Farhad Shami, said on Saturday afternoon Kurdish forces were "tightening the security perimeter imposed on the northern section of al-Sinaa prison.”

Shami said on Saturday pro-ISIS media published a video which purported to show a number of people who had been abducted. Shami confirmed the men in the video were kitchen staff from the prison and said the SDF had lost contact with them during the first attack on al-Sinaa.

Sayel al-Zaoba, an official in the city of Shadadi’s military council, denied reports of a riot at a prison holding ISIS militants in the city, according to North Press Agency.

Zaoba said there was a firm security cordon around al-Kum prison in Shadadi.

The Special Operations Joint Task Force – Levant said on Sunday the coalition was assisting the SDF in their fight against ISIS.

The SOJTF-Levant said they were "committed to assisting and enabling” the SDF in the "continued efforts to protect the people” of Northeast Syria.
