PMF brigade pushes back ISIS attack in Diyala

SULAIMANI — Popular Mobilization Forces (Hashd al-Shaabi) said one of their brigades managed to foil an attack by the Islamic State (ISIS) in Diyala’s district of Miqdadiya (Sharaban) on Friday (January 22) night.

ISIS militants attacked members of the Iraqi army and police and tried to destroy a thermal camera before the 24thBrigade of Hashd al-Shaabi pushed back the assault, a statement from Popular Mobilization Forces’ media said.

Hashd al-Shaabi had set up a thermal camera and security point in the area.

An attack by ISIS militants early in the morning on Friday killed 11 members of the Iraqi army in their barracks in one of the deadliest attacks on Iraqi forces in months.

The attack occurred in al-Azim sub-district in Diyala, where ISIS took advantage of the foggy weather to stage the raid, Nihad Mohammed, a spokesperson from Diyala police said.
