Political, literary, social activities should be suspended due to COVID-19 increase: Sulaimani officials

SULAIMANI — Officials in Sulaimani governorate decided on Saturday (July 24) that all political, literary, artistic, organizational, and social activities that attract large numbers of people should be suspended amid a surge in the number of officially-recorded COVID-19 cases in the Kurdistan Region.

Following a meeting chaired by Governor Haval Abubakir, officials released a statement and called on citizens to abide by all public health guidelines and self-protection measures, particularly wearing face masks.

It said that citizens should receive a vaccine in order to curb the spread of the virus.

On July 18, The Kurdistan Region shattered its record for the number of COVID-19 cases recorded in a single day, tallying 1,985 new infections of the deadly lung disease.

According to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Health Ministry, there have been 210,818 officially-recorded cases of coronavirus infection in the Kurdistan Region. An official tally of 190,392 patients have recovered from COVID-19 and 4,660 have died from it as of Friday.
