SULAIMANI — A German court on Tuesday (November 30) became
the first in the world to sentence an Islamic State (ISIS) member for the crime
of genocide against the Yazidi minority.
The court in Frankfurt gave a life sentence to Taha
al-Jumailly, a 29-year-old Iraqi man, after he was found guilty of genocide and
crimes against humanity for the killing of a five-year-old Yazidi girl in
Fallujah in 2019, according to AFP.
Jumailly was accused of chaining the girl outdoors in
50-degree Celsius weather, where she died of thirst. He had bought the girl and
her mother as slaves in Syria, Germany’s Deutsche Welle reported.
Jumailly’s wife, a German national named Jennifer Wenisch,
was sentenced to 10 years in October for crimes against humanity and aiding and
abetting the killing for her role in the girl’s death.
The child’s mother, only identified as Nora, testified in
both trials and was represented by human rights lawyer Amal Clooney.
