SULAIMANI — Two Iraqi soldiers were killed and three others were wounded in an attack in Saladin governorate’s Mutaibija area early on Wednesday (July 21).

A source from the police told Turkish state-owned Anadolu Agency that Islamic state (ISIS) militants were responsible and had targeted a military post held by the Army’s 66th Brigade.

In December, 2017, federal security forces, in cooperation with the Peshmerga and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) and aided by Coalition airstrikes, declared victory over ISIS. Since then, the militant group has resorted to guerrilla hit-and-run tactics, but remains a potent threat in some parts of the country.
