SULAIMANI — Journalist Hemin Mamand was released on bail on Sunday (April 5) after being held in custody for eleven days.

Mamand’s lawyer Goran Dibagay told NRT Digital Media that the journalist was released on 5 million Iraqi dinar ($4,200) bail.

He was arrested on March 24 at his home in the Kurdistan Region’s capital after criticizing Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani in a Facebook post.

Just prior to his release from custody, 122 well-known figures including New Generation Movement lawmaker in the Kurdistan Parliament Kazm Faruq issued a public letter calling for Mamand to be freed.

Last week, his lawyer told NRT Digital Media that the security forces were preventing his legal team from meeting with him.
