SLAIMANI — Non-contract teachers in Erbil protested on Wednesday (January 22) demanding full employment contracts and for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to compensate them for the years that they spent on austerity contracts.

The teachers said that salaries for non-contract teachers is minuscule compared with regular teachers, despite the fact that they do the same jobs. Moreover, they said that salary disbursement is regularly delayed.

In response to the 2014 financial crisis in the Kurdistan Region, the government instituted a number of austerity measures in an effort to save money.

Among them was to create a class of non-contract positions, where teachers are paid a lump sum per class and do not receive benefits. Moreover, the pay is lower than teachers on full-contracts or those with “on-bond” status.

Now that the financial health of the Region has improved somewhat, those affected by the austerity measures are pressuring the government to eliminate them and return to previous practice.
