SULAIMANI — The second Deputy Secretary General of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Barham Salih, said on Friday (May 19) the message Change Movement (Gorran) leader Nawshirwan Mustafa pursued in life will remain intact.

“Nawshirwan Mustafa embodied an up-to-date national endeavor and was a great guide who had a huge impact on the history and the current situation of Kurdish people,” Salih said, speaking to NRT.

The PUK official stressed the Kurdistan Region would enjoy justice, freedom and reform by pursuing Mustafa’s message.

“The departure of Nawshirwan Mustafa left a gap too big to fill in my political and personal life,” he added.

The General Coordinator of Gorran, Nawshirwan Mustafa, died one week after he returned to the Kurdistan Region from a medical trip in London.

Mustafa travelled to Germany for medical treatment in September 2015. After his stay in Germany, he went to the U.K. for a “medical follow-up.”

Mustafa was born in 1944 in the city of Sulaimani and graduated from the Political Science College at the University of Baghdad in 1967.

He was a co-founder of the PUK in 1975 and remained a PUK official until 2006 as the party’s Deputy Secretary General.

On July 25, 2009 he founded the Gorran party. His party came in second place by winning 24 seats in the Kurdistan Parliament in the 2013 general elections.
