SULAIMANI — Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Yousif Mohammed said he hoped Newroz would become a step to building a just government fond of its people.

“We should make the dream of Kurdistan’s independence through action, without [political] mottos,” Mohammed said in a statement on Monday (March 20).

Mohammed congratulated the people of the Kurdistan Region and Peshmerga forces on Newroz, the Kurdish New Year.

He also acknowledged employees who continue to resist despite suffering the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) cut to their salaries for more than one year.

The KRG, due to the economic crisis facing the Kurdistan Region, decided to withhold public employees’ salaries by 15-75 percent in February 2016.

The decision brought hundreds of teachers and employees on the streets of Sulaimani city to protest against the austerity measure.

The Kurdistan Region has faced an economic crisis since 2014 due to a cut in the region’s budget share from Baghdad, Islamic State fight, an influx of Syrian refugees and Iraqi displaced people who are sheltered in the Kurdistan Region, as well as the fall in oil price in the international markets.
