SULAIMANI – Turkey’s Foreign Ministry rebuked a request by the Kirkuk governorate to fly the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) flag at official institutions.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry, released a statement on Sunday (March 19) following a question addressed to the ministry’s spokesman Huseyin Muftuoglu, saying Turkey “criticizes” the Kirkuk governor’s request to raise the Kurdistan Region’s flag over government’s buildings, the Turkish Daily Sabah reported.

“The constitution in Iraq determined the process about disputed local administrative borders,” the statement said.

The Foreign Ministry added that “taking one-sided decisions” in Kirkuk could harm the efforts of stability and building consensus in Iraq.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry also warned that “these types of initiatives carry the risk of eroding [the] multi-cultural identity of Kirkuk.”

The Kirkuk Governorate made the request to use the flag of the provincial council last week.

The governorate also decided to use the Kurdish language in official letters alongside Arabic.
