SULAIMANI — Heavy rains have caused flooding in parts of the Kurdistan Region, damaging dozens of houses.

NRT Digital Media reporters said floods hit Erbil, Duhok, Zakho, and Kirkuk on Saturday (December 1).

Rising water damaged around 20 homes in Duhok city, where residents told NRT Digital Media that water began entering their houses at 5 a.m.

We could not “save our belongings, we could only save our children,” one said.

Separately, ten houses were damaged by floodwaters in the Simel district of Duhok province.

“Officials promised us [that they would solve this] during the elections, but this our situation after the elections,” a resident from Zakho told NRT Digital Media.

NRT Digital Media reporter Nabaz Miqdad added that heavy rains had flooded several neighborhoods in Kirkuk city.

Despite preparations by authorities in Erbil over the past several months, parts of the city also flooded on Saturday.

This follows damaging floods in October, when heavy rains destroyed dozens of homes and several bridges were washed away in the northeastern part of Erbil governorate.

Authorities said later that the flood damage would cost tens of billions of Iraqi dinars to repair.

In May 2017, several neighborhoods in Erbil and parts of the Soran district were hit by severe flooding.

Last year, four people died as a result of flash flooding in Duhok.
