SULAIMANI – The formation of the fifth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) will be based on the results of the parliamentary election, said a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) on Thursday (November 1).

Head of KDP Leadership Council in Sulaimani Arif Tayfur said in press conference that his party would form a committee to meet with the other political parties to discuss the formation of a new government.

“Any party that would like to participate in the government has to promise to remain in the cabinet for four years and they must not leave us in the middle of the road,” he added.

He further said that the KDP would simply form the new cabinet with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) if the other parties refuse to participate.

“The other political parties can become the [official] opposition,” he concluded.

The Kurdistan Judicial Council approved on Tuesday the final results of the Kurdistan parliamentary election held of September 30, which had been announced by the election commission on October 20.

According to the results, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) secured 45 seats, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) 21, Gorran 12, New Generation 8, Kurdistan Islamic Group 7, and Towards Reform, including KIU and the Kurdistan Islamic Movement, 5 seats.
