Iraqi parliament speaker meets with Iranian ambassador in Baghdad

SULAIMANI — Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbusi met with Iranian ambassador Iraj Masjedi to Baghdad to discuss the political and security situation in the country.

Halbusi’s office released a statement on Sunday (September 23) saying that they discussed the countries' bilateral relations and ways to strengthen it.

Iran’s ambassador congratulated Halbusi on his new position, according to the statement.

Halbusi stressed the importance of regional assistance for Iraq, including the reconstruction of those areas liberated from Islamic State, the statement read.

Iraq looks forward to more cooperation with its regional partners at all levels, the recently-elected speaker said.

Halbusi expressed his readiness to “work to strengthen parliamentary cooperation between Iraq and Iran,” the statement quoted the speaker as saying. He also called for “a complete solution of the water dispute between the two countries.”

The Iranian ambassador, for his part, stressed the need "to support the current state economic relations between the two countries and to improve it" according to the statement.

Halbusi was elected as the speaker of Iraqi Council of Representatives on September 15.
