SULAIMANI — The Democratic Union Party (PYD) said on Sunday (September 23) that the party’s primary goal is the liberation Afrin from the Turkish-backed rebels, who captured the district in March from the Kurdish forces.

A number of PYD members held a meeting that was led by party co-chair Aysha Hisso at the Culture and Arts Center in al-Darbasiyah, in northeastern Syrian, to mark the anniversary of the party's founding.

The PYD is working with all its strength to liberate Afrin from Turkey's rebel allies, she said during the meeting.

“Liberation of Afrin is our primary goal,” Firat News Agency (ANF) quoted Hisso as saying.

The PYD co-chair added that attacks and conspiracies carried out since the Rojava [Kurdish controlled-areas in northeastern Syria] revolution had targeted the Kurds in the country.

“Regional powers have wanted to realize their interests through the peoples of Syria,” she said according to ANF.

The Turkish army and allied Syrian rebels launched an offensive known as Operation Olive Branch on January to capture Afrin from Syrian Kurdish forces.

The operation concluded with the capture of the region on March 24.

Turkey sees the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) as “terrorist organizations” and extensions of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

The PYD is widely seen as the political arm of the YPG/YPJ.
