SULAIMANI – The Nasr Alliance on Wednesday (September 12) said that Haidar al-Abadi is the only candidate it will nominate for the position of Iraqi Prime Minister.

“Nasr’s project is to save Iraq, [which will] not to be affected by the policy of the international and regional sides,” the alliance said in a written statement.

It added that "Nasr carries its reform project with vision of development which is able to put the country on the path of stability and growth.”

The creation of a new Iraqi cabinet has been delayed since May, when the results of the parliamentary election underwent a recount precipitated by allegations of electoral fraud.

In May 12 election, Moqtada al-Sadr’s Sairoon topped the results of the election with 54 seats, followed by the Fateh bloc led by Hadi al-Amiri, and Prime Minister Haider Abadi’s Nasr coming in third.

Iraq's top Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani said on Monday (September 10) that the next prime minister must be a politician who has not been in a position of authority in the past.

“[The Marja] will not support the next prime minister if they are selected from politicians who have been in authority in the past, without distinguishing between the party individuals or the independents,” the statement read.
