SULAIMANI — The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Interior said on Monday (April 6) that those who attended a funeral in Erbil’s Karezan neighborhood will be brought before the court, including those who became infected with coronavirus after they recover from the disease.

Such gatherings were prohibited on public health grounds. Nevertheless, the funeral went ahead and resulted in one of the most significant incidents of viral transmission during Kurdistan Region’s coronavirus outbreak.

According to the KRG’s health ministry, those 71 people became infected either by attending the funeral or having contact with someone who did, resulting in infections in the neighborhoods of Kani Gani, Altun City, Shekh Ahmed, Karezan, Zanko, Chinar, Mamostaian, 121 of Gullan, Zhyan and Zilan city.

“We have asked the Erbil governor to deal legally with those patients and to punish them through the public prosecutor after they recover from the disease,” said KRG interior ministry Rebar Ahmed during a press conference.

So far, 280 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the Region. At least two people have died and 88 others have recovered from COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus infection.
