SULAIMANI — Residents of Said Sadiq protested in front of the municipal office on Monday (January 27) against a lack of services.

Two protesters were wounded in a clash with the security forces in the city, located 45 km (28 miles) southeast of Sulaimani, and were taken to Shahid Shawkat hospital for treatment.

The demonstrators demanded an increase in the number of hours of public electricity and that the government distribute kerosene for heating.

Zana Ali told NRT Digital Media that his life had been threatened for organizing the protest.

“They have threatened me and offended me just because I demand a proper life,” Ali said.

“The people of Said Sadiq today demanded their own rights and protested. [The authorities] have offended the people several times and have threatened me on the phone,” he added.

The security forces also briefly arrested NRT Digital Media reporters Wrya Hama Karim and Omar Fatah while they were covering the protest and seized their equipment. They were later released.
