SULAIMANI – Eleven political parties in the Kurdistan Region will meet in Erbil on Saturday to officially form an electoral list to contest the provincial election in Kirkuk, Change Movement (Gorran) Executive Body member Darbaz Muhammad said on Thursday (September 19).

The list was announced on September 9 and will be known as “Kirkuk is Kurdistani.”

It will likely include the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), the Change Movement (Gorran), the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU), the Kurdistan Islamic Group (KIG), the Communist Party of Kurdistan, and several other parties.

Muhammad confirmed to NRT Digital Media that his party would participate in the meeting.

After meeting with PUK representatives, the New Generation Movement hinted that it will not join the list and is still considering whether to field candidates independently in the Kirkuk election.

However, during a meeting with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) on Thursday, the head of the Movement's external relations said that it would attend the meeting.

Provincial elections will take place in April 2020 in all Iraqi governorates, except those in the Kurdistan Region.

The KDP has not yet officially revealed whether it will participate in the list and has filed a lawsuit to stop the election from taking place. KDP-affiliated media quoted a PUK member when the list was formed indicating that the KDP would participate. It is expected to attend the meeting on Saturday.
